POWER Announces CLN® Emission Control Demonstration on LM 2500 Engine Print E-mail

Fremont, California April 24, 2009 - Advanced Power Projects, Inc. (POWER) announces the successful demonstration of its Simplified Combined Cycle (SCC) using the Cheng Power Systems CLN® technology on a GE LM2500 PE combustion gas turbine. The tests were conducted at the Calpine Corporation-operated Agnews Power Plant in San Jose, California, and were primarily funded by StatoilHydro.

CLN® is a cost-effective emission control technology that simultaneously reduces both NOx and greenhouse gas (CO2), as well as provides energy savings. In January 2009, the new premixed steam and fuel nozzles were installed at the plant, replacing the water injected fuel nozzles. Data were collected at 14 MW, 18 MW and 22 MW outputs. The test resulted in 8 ppmvd (at 15% O2) NOx as recorded on the Calpine Continuous Emissions Monitoring System, at 1.7 steam to fuel ratio and 22 MW output. This was better than expected.

The test lowered NOx emissions to meet stringent California emission control standards without the need for ammonia flowing into the exhaust flow catalytic reduction system. The results were witnessed by a California State-assigned third party and recorded on the plant's continuous emissions monitoring system. With the U.S. economic stimulus package, the payback for such systems may be as low as six (6) months when a steam source is available.
